About

Christine Herman is a printmaker whose abstract works on paper are inspired by the immeasurable beauty of nature. Her focus is to create work that celebrates the sacredness and rhythms of the natural world. A first generation Canadian with Slavic roots, she now lives in Northern California.

While still practicing as an interior designer, Christine first began exhibiting watercolors in galleries and art fairs in the Midwest. However, a pivotal decision to move to New Mexico in 1999 spurred her to discover and fall in love with printmaking. She began studying at University of New Mexico at Taos, honing her skills and developing her imagery via the monotype process (one-of-a-kind images which are a blend of painting and printmaking). She later expanded her studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, and the University of Minnesota at Duluth.

Christine's distinctive work is process-driven in response to her experiences while hiking or cycling in nature. Expressing the story of the passage of time, alluding to memory, and a sense of place, she imbues her images with a delicate sensuality transporting one's imagination to the inner landscape of heart and mind.

Using photographic references, she employs mark-making and textured color fields to create abstract multi-layered compositions. The main aim of her approach is to create a kind of meditative journey while inviting the viewer to a deeper appreciation and connection with nature through the metaphor of landscape and botanical forms.

As a life-long creative explorer, Christine continually improvises and innovates by combining different printmaking techniques, including collagraph, woodcut, etching, monotype, and book arts.
